1. Lorsque je voulais guérir Israël, L'iniquité d'Ephraïm et la méchanceté de Samarie se sont révélées, Car ils ont agi frauduleusement; Le voleur est arrivé, la bande s'est répandue au dehors.
2. Ils ne se disent pas dans leur coeur Que je me souviens de toute leur méchanceté; Maintenant leurs oeuvres les entourent, Elles sont devant ma face.
3. Ils réjouissent le roi par leur méchanceté, Et les chefs par leurs mensonges.
4. Ils sont tous adultères, Semblables à un four chauffé par le boulanger: Il cesse d'attiser le feu Depuis qu'il a pétri la pâte jusqu'à ce qu'elle soit levée.
5. Au jour de notre roi, Les chefs se rendent malades par les excès du vin; Le roi tend la main aux moqueurs.
6. Ils appliquent aux embûches leur coeur pareil à un four; Toute la nuit dort leur boulanger, Et au matin le four brûle comme un feu embrasé.
7. Ils sont tous ardents comme un four, Et ils dévorent leurs juges; Tous leurs rois tombent: Aucun d'eux ne m'invoque.
8. Ephraïm se mêle avec les peuples, Ephraïm est un gâteau qui n'a pas été retourné.
9. Des étrangers consument sa force, Et il ne s'en doute pas; La vieillesse s'empare de lui, Et il ne s'en doute pas.
10. L'orgueil d'Israël témoigne contre lui; Ils ne reviennent pas à l'Eternel, leur Dieu, Et ils ne le cherchent pas, malgré tout cela.
11. Ephraïm est comme une colombe stupide, sans intelligence; Ils implorent l'Egypte, ils vont en Assyrie.
12. S'ils partent, j'étendrai sur eux mon filet, Je les précipiterai comme les oiseaux du ciel; Je les châtierai, comme ils en ont été avertis dans leur assemblée.
13. Malheur à eux, parce qu'ils me fuient! Ruine sur eux, parce qu'ils me sont infidèles! Je voudrais les sauver, Mais ils disent contre moi des paroles mensongères.
14. Ils ne crient pas vers moi dans leur coeur, Mais ils se lamentent sur leur couche; Ils se rassemblent pour avoir du blé et du moût, Et ils s'éloignent de moi.
15. Je les ai châtiés, j'ai fortifié leurs bras; Et ils méditent le mal contre moi.
16. Ce n'est pas au Très-Haut qu'ils retournent; Ils sont comme un arc trompeur. Leurs chefs tomberont par l'épée, A cause de l'insolence de leur langue. C'est ce qui les rendra un objet de risée dans le pays d'Egypte.
1. `When I give healing to Israel, Then revealed is the iniquity of Ephraim, And the wickedness of Samaria, For they have wrought falsehood, And a thief doth come in, Stript off hath a troop in the street,
2. And they do not say to their heart, [That] all their evil I have remembered, Now compassed them have their doings, Over-against My face they have been.
3. With their wickedness they make glad a king, And with their lies -- princes.
4. All of them [are] adulterers, Like a burning oven of a baker, He ceaseth from stirring up after kneading the dough, till its leavening.
5. A day of our king! Princes have polluted themselves [with] the poison of wine, He hath drawn out his hand with scorners.
6. For they have drawn near, As an oven [is] their heart, In their lying in wait all the night sleep doth their baker, Morning! he is burning as a flaming fire.
7. All of them are warm as an oven, And they have devoured their judges, All their kings have fallen, There is none calling unto Me among them.
8. Ephraim! among peoples he mixeth himself, Ephraim hath been a cake unturned.
9. Devoured have strangers his power, And he hath not known, Also old age hath sprinkled [itself] on him, And he hath not known.
10. And humbled hath been the excellency of Israel to his face, And they have not turned back unto Jehovah their God, Nor have they sought Him for all this.
11. And Ephraim is as a simple dove without heart, Egypt they called on -- [to] Asshur they have gone.
12. When they go I spread over them My net, As the fowl of the heavens I bring them down, I chastise them as their company hath heard.
13. Wo to them, for they wandered from Me, Destruction to them, for they transgressed against Me, And I -- I ransom them, and they have spoken lies against Me,
14. And have not cried unto Me with their heart, but howl on their beds, For corn and new wine they assemble themselves, They turn aside against Me.
15. And I instructed -- I strengthened their arms, And concerning Me they think evil!
16. They turn back -- not to the Most High, They have been as a deceitful bow, Fall by sword do their princes, From the insolence of their tongue, This [is] their derision in the land of Egypt!
