1. Ecoute maintenant, ô Jacob, mon serviteur! O Israël, que j'ai choisi!
2. Ainsi parle l'Eternel, qui t'a fait, Et qui t'a formé dès ta naissance, Celui qui est ton soutien: Ne crains rien, mon serviteur Jacob, Mon Israël, que j'ai choisi.
3. Car je répandrai des eaux sur le sol altéré, Et des ruisseaux sur la terre desséchée; Je répandrai mon esprit sur ta race, Et ma bénédiction sur tes rejetons.
4. Ils pousseront comme au milieu de l'herbe, Comme les saules près des courants d'eau.
5. Celui-ci dira: Je suis à l'Eternel; Celui-là se réclamera du nom de Jacob; Cet autre écrira de sa main: à l'Eternel! Et prononcera avec amour le nom d'Israël.
6. Ainsi parle l'Eternel, roi d'Israël et son rédempteur, L'Eternel des armées: Je suis le premier et je suis le dernier, Et hors moi il n'y a point de Dieu.
7. Qui a, comme moi, fait des prédictions Qu'il le déclare et me le prouve!, Depuis que j'ai fondé le peuple ancien? Qu'ils annoncent l'avenir et ce qui doit arriver!
8. N'ayez pas peur, et ne tremblez pas; Ne te l'ai-je pas dès longtemps annoncé et déclaré? Vous êtes mes témoins: Y a-t-il un autre Dieu que moi? Il n'y a pas d'autre rocher, je n'en connais point.
9. Ceux qui fabriquent des idoles ne sont tous que vanité, Et leurs plus belles oeuvres ne servent à rien; Elles le témoignent elles-mêmes: Elles n'ont ni la vue, ni l'intelligence, Afin qu'ils soient dans la confusion.
10. Qui est-ce qui fabrique un dieu, ou fond une idole, Pour n'en retirer aucune utilité?
11. Voici, tous ceux qui y travaillent seront confondus, Et les ouvriers ne sont que des hommes; Qu'ils se réunissent tous, qu'ils se présentent, Et tous ensemble ils seront tremblants et couverts de honte.
12. Le forgeron fait une hache, Il travaille avec le charbon, Et il la façonne à coups de marteau; Il la forge d'un bras vigoureux; Mais a-t-il faim, le voilà sans force; Ne boit-il pas d'eau, le voilà épuisé.
13. Le charpentier étend le cordeau, Fait un tracé au crayon, Façonne le bois avec un couteau, Et marque ses dimensions avec le compas; Et il produit une figure d'homme, Une belle forme humaine, Pour qu'elle habite dans une maison.
14. Il se coupe des cèdres, Il prend des rouvres et des chênes, Et fait un choix parmi les arbres de la forêt; Il plante des pins, Et la pluie les fait croître.
15. Ces arbres servent à l'homme pour brûler, Il en prend et il se chauffe. Il y met aussi le feu pour cuire du pain; Et il en fait également un dieu, qu'il adore, Il en fait une idole, devant laquelle il se prosterne.
16. Il brûle au feu la moitié de son bois, Avec cette moitié il cuit de la viande, Il apprête un rôti, et se rassasie; Il se chauffe aussi, et dit: Ha! Ha! Je me chauffe, je vois la flamme!
17. Et avec le reste il fait un dieu, son idole, Il se prosterne devant elle, il l'adore, il l'invoque, Et s'écrie: Sauve-moi! Car tu es mon dieu!
18. Ils n'ont ni intelligence, ni entendement, Car on leur a fermé les yeux pour qu'ils ne voient point, Et le coeur pour qu'ils ne comprennent point.
19. Il ne rentre pas en lui-même, Et il n'a ni l'intelligence, ni le bon sens de dire: J'en ai brûlé une moitié au feu, J'ai cuit du pain sur les charbons, J'ai rôti de la viande et je l'ai mangée; Et avec le reste je ferais une abomination! Je me prosternerais devant un morceau de bois!
20. Il se repaît de cendres, Son coeur abusé l'égare, Et il ne sauvera point son âme, et ne dira point: N'est-ce pas du mensonge que j'ai dans ma main?
21. Souviens-toi de ces choses, ô Jacob! O Israël! car tu es mon serviteur; Je t'ai formé, tu es mon serviteur; Israël, je ne t'oublierai pas.
22. J'efface tes transgressions comme un nuage, Et tes péchés comme une nuée; Reviens à moi, Car je t'ai racheté.
23. Cieux, réjouissez-vous! car l'Eternel a agi; Profondeurs de la terre, retentissez d'allégresse! Montagnes, éclatez en cris de joie! Vous aussi, forêts, avec tous vos arbres! Car l'Eternel a racheté Jacob, Il a manifesté sa gloire en Israël.
24. Ainsi parle l'Eternel, ton rédempteur, Celui qui t'a formé dès ta naissance: Moi, l'Eternel, j'ai fait toutes choses, Seul j'ai déployé les cieux, Seul j'ai étendu la terre.
25. J'anéantis les signes des prophètes de mensonge, Et je proclame insensés les devins; Je fais reculer les sages, Et je tourne leur science en folie.
26. Je confirme la parole de mon serviteur, Et j'accomplis ce que prédisent mes envoyés; Je dis de Jérusalem: Elle sera habitée, Et des villes de Juda: Elles seront rebâties; Et je relèverai leurs ruines.
27. Je dis à l'abîme: Dessèche-toi, Je tarirai tes fleuves.
28. Je dis de Cyrus: Il est mon berger, Et il accomplira toute ma volonté; Il dira de Jérusalem: Qu'elle soit rebâtie! Et du temple: Qu'il soit fondé!
1. And now, hear, O Jacob, My servant, And Israel, whom I have fixed on:
2. Thus said Jehovah, thy Maker, and thy Former, From the womb He doth help thee; Fear not, my servant Jacob, And Jeshurun, whom I have fixed on.
3. For I pour waters on a thirsty one, And floods on a dry land, I pour My Spirit on thy seed, And My blessing on thine offspring.
4. And they have sprung up as among grass, As willows by streams of water.
5. This [one] saith, For Jehovah I [am], And this calleth [himself] by the name of Jacob, And this [one] writeth [with] his hand, `For Jehovah,' and by the name of Israel surnameth himself.
6. Thus said Jehovah, king of Israel, And his Redeemer, Jehovah of Hosts: `I [am] the first, and I the last, And besides Me there is no God.
7. And who as I, doth call and declare it, And arrange it for Me, Since My placing the people of antiquity, And things that are coming, And those that do come, declare they to them?
8. Fear not, nor be afraid, Have I not from that time caused thee to hear, and declared? And ye [are] My witnesses, Is there a God besides Me? yea, there is none, A Rock I have not known.
9. Framers of a graven image [are] all of them emptiness, And their desirable things do not profit, And their own witnesses they [are], They see not, nor know, that they may be ashamed.
10. Who hath formed a god, And a molten image poured out -- not profitable?
11. Lo, all his companions are ashamed, As to artizans -- they [are] of men, All of them gather together, they stand up, They fear, they are ashamed together.
12. He hath wrought iron [with] an axe, And hath wrought with coals, And with hammers doth form it, And doth work it by his powerful arm, Yea, he is hungry, and there is no power, He doth not drink water, and he is wearied.
13. He hath wrought [with] wood, He hath stretched out a rule, He doth mark it out with a line, He maketh it with carving tools, And with a compass he marketh it out, And maketh it according to the form of a man, According to the beauty of a man, To remain in the house.
14. Cutting down to himself cedars, He taketh also a cypress, and an oak, And he strengtheneth [it] for himself Among the trees of a forest, He hath planted an ash, and the shower doth nourish [it].
15. And it hath been for man to burn, And he taketh of them, and becometh warm, Yea, he kindleth [it], and hath baked bread, Yea, he maketh a god, and boweth himself, He hath made it a graven image, And he falleth down to it.
16. Half of it he hath burnt in the fire, By [this] half of it he eateth flesh, He roasteth a roasting, and is satisfied, Yea, he is warm, and saith: `Aha, I have become warm, I have enjoyed the light.
17. And its remnant for a god he hath made -- For his graven image, He falleth down to it, and worshippeth, And prayeth unto it, and he saith, `Deliver me, for my god thou [art].'
18. They have not known, nor do they understand, For He hath daubed their eyes from seeing, Their heart from acting wisely.
19. And none doth turn [it] back unto his heart, Nor hath knowledge nor understanding to say, `Half of it I have burned in the fire, Yea, also, I have baked bread over its coals, I roast flesh and I eat, And its remnant for an abomination I make, To the stock of a tree I fall down.'
20. Feeding on ashes, the heart is deceived, It hath turned him aside, And he delivereth not his soul, nor saith: `Is there not a lie in my right hand?'
21. Remember these, O Jacob, and Israel, For My servant thou [art], I formed thee, a servant to Me thou [art], O Israel, thou dost not forget Me.
22. I have blotted out, as [by] a thick cloud, Thy transgressions, And as [by] a cloud thy sins, Return unto Me, for I have redeemed thee.
23. Sing, O heavens, for Jehovah hath wrought, Shout, O lower parts of earth, Break forth, O mountains, with singing, Forest, and every tree in it, For Jehovah hath redeemed Jacob, And in Israel He doth beautify Himself.
24. Thus said Jehovah, thy redeemer, And thy framer from the womb: `I [am] Jehovah, doing all things, Stretching out the heavens by Myself, Spreading out the earth -- who [is] with Me?
25. Making void the tokens of devisers, And diviners it maketh mad, Turning the wise backward, And their knowledge it maketh foolish.
26. Confirming the word of His servant, The counsel of His messengers it perfecteth, Who is saying of Jerusalem, She is inhabited, And of cities of Judah, They shall be built, and her wastes I raise up,
27. Who is saying to the deep, Be dry, and thy rivers I cause to dry up,
28. Who is saying of Cyrus, My shepherd, And all my delight He doth perfect, So as to say of Jerusalem, Thou art built, And of the temple, Thou art founded.
