1. Je n'avais pas encore posé les battants des portes, lorsque Sanballat, Tobija, Guéschem, l'Arabe, et nos autres ennemis apprirent que j'avais rebâti la muraille et qu'il n'y restait plus de brèche.
2. Alors Sanballat et Guéschem m'envoyèrent dire: Viens, et ayons ensemble une entrevue dans les villages de la vallée d'Ono. Ils avaient médité de me faire du mal.
3. Je leur envoyai des messagers avec cette réponse: J'ai un grand ouvrage à exécuter, et je ne puis descendre; le travail serait interrompu pendant que je le quitterais pour aller vers vous.
4. Ils m'adressèrent quatre fois la même demande, et je leur fis la même réponse.
5. Sanballat m'envoya ce message une cinquième fois par son serviteur, qui tenait à la main une lettre ouverte.
6. Il y était écrit: Le bruit se répand parmi les nations et Gaschmu affirme que toi et les Juifs vous pensez à vous révolter, et que c'est dans ce but que tu rebâtis la muraille. Tu vas, dit-on, devenir leur roi,
7. tu as même établi des prophètes pour te proclamer à Jérusalem roi de Juda. Et maintenant ces choses arriveront à la connaissance du roi. Viens donc, et consultons-nous ensemble.
8. Je fis répondre à Sanballat: Ce que tu dis là n'est pas; c'est toi qui l'inventes!
9. Tous ces gens voulaient nous effrayer, et ils se disaient: Ils perdront courage, et l'oeuvre ne se fera pas. Maintenant, ô Dieu, fortifie-moi!
10. Je me rendis chez Schemaeja, fils de Delaja, fils de Mehétabeel. Il s'était enfermé, et il dit: Allons ensemble dans la maison de Dieu, au milieu du temple, et fermons les portes du temple; car ils viennent pour te tuer, et c'est pendant la nuit qu'ils viendront pour te tuer.
11. Je répondis: Un homme comme moi prendre la fuite! Et quel homme tel que moi pourrait entrer dans le temple et vivre? Je n'entrerai point.
12. Et je reconnus que ce n'était pas Dieu qui l'envoyait. Mais il prophétisa ainsi sur moi parce que Sanballat et Tobija lui avaient donné de l'argent.
13. En le gagnant ainsi, ils espéraient que j'aurais peur, et que je suivrais ses avis et commettrais un péché; et ils auraient profité de cette atteinte à ma réputation pour me couvrir d'opprobre.
14. Souviens-toi, ô mon Dieu, de Tobija et de Sanballat, et de leurs oeuvres! Souviens-toi aussi de Noadia, la prophétesse, et des autres prophètes qui cherchaient à m'effrayer!
15. La muraille fut achevée le vingt-cinquième jour du mois d'Elul, en cinquante-deux jours.
16. Lorsque tous nos ennemis l'apprirent, toutes les nations qui étaient autour de nous furent dans la crainte; elles éprouvèrent une grande humiliation, et reconnurent que l'oeuvre s'était accomplie par la volonté de notre Dieu.
17. Dans ce temps-là, il y avait aussi des grands de Juda qui adressaient fréquemment des lettres à Tobija et qui en recevaient de lui.
18. Car plusieurs en Juda étaient liés à lui par serment, parce qu'il était gendre de Schecania, fils d'Arach, et que son fils Jochanan avait pris la fille de Meschullam, fils de Bérékia.
19. Ils disaient même du bien de lui en ma présence, et ils lui rapportaient mes paroles. Tobija envoyait des lettres pour m'effrayer.
1. And it cometh to pass, when it hath been heard by Sanballat, and Tobiah, and by Geshem the Arabian, and by the rest of our enemies, that I have builded the wall, and there hath not been left in it a breach, (also, till that time the doors I had not set up in the gates,)
2. that Sanballat sendeth, also Geshem, unto me, saying, `Come and we meet together in the villages, in the valley of Ono;' and they are thinking to do to me evil.
3. And I send unto them messengers, saying, `A great work I am doing, and I am not able to come down; why doth the work cease when I let it alone, and have come down unto you?'
4. and they send unto me, according to this word, four times, and I return them [word] according to this word.
5. And Sanballat sendeth unto me, according to this word, a fifth time, his servant, and an open letter in his hand;
6. it is written in it, `Among the nations it hath been heard, and Gashmu is saying: Thou and the Jews are thinking to rebel, therefore thou art building the wall, and thou hast been to them for a king -- according to these words!
7. And also, prophets thou hast appointed to call for thee in Jerusalem, saying, A king [is] in Judah, and now it is heard by the king according to these words; and now come, and we take counsel together.'
8. And I send unto him, saying, `It hath not been according to these words that thou art saying, for from thine own heart thou art devising them;'
9. for all of them are making us afraid, saying, `Their hands are too feeble for the work, and it is not done;' and now, strengthen Thou my hands.
10. And I have entered the house of Shemaiah son of Delaiah, son of Mehetabeel -- and he is restrained -- and he saith, `Let us meet at the house of God, at the inside of the temple, and we shut the doors of the temple, for they are coming in to slay thee -- yea, by night they are coming in to slay thee.'
11. And I say, `A man such as I -- doth he flee? and who as I, that doth go in unto the temple, and live? -- I do not go in.'
12. And I discern, and lo, God hath not sent him, for in the prophecy he hath spoken unto me both Tobiah and Sanballat hired him,
13. so that he [is] an hireling, that I may fear and do so, and I had sinned, and it had been to them for an evil name that they may reproach me.
14. Be mindful, O my God, of Tobiah, and of Sanballat, according to these his works, and also, of Noadiah the prophetess, and of the rest of the prophets who have been making me afraid.
15. And the wall is completed in the twenty and fifth of Elul, on the fifty and second day;
16. and it cometh to pass, when all our enemies have heard, and all the nations who are round about us see, that they fall greatly in their own eyes, and know that by our God hath this work been done.
17. Also, in those days the freemen of Judah are multiplying their letters going unto Tobiah, and those of Tobiah are coming in unto them;
18. for many in Judah are sworn to him, for he [is] son-in-law to Shechaniah son of Arah, and Jehohanan his son hath taken the daughter of Meshullam son of Berechiah;
19. also, his good deeds they have been saying before me, and my words they have been taking out to him; letters hath Tobiah sent to make me afraid.
