1. Samuel mourut. Tout Israël s'étant assemblé le pleura, et on l'enterra dans sa demeure à Rama. Ce fut alors que David se leva et descendit au désert de Paran.
2. Il y avait à Maon un homme fort riche, possédant des biens à Carmel; il avait trois mille brebis et mille chèvres, et il se trouvait à Carmel pour la tonte de ses brebis.
3. Le nom de cet homme était Nabal, et sa femme s'appelait Abigaïl; c'était une femme de bon sens et belle de figure, mais l'homme était dur et méchant dans ses actions. Il descendait de Caleb.
4. David apprit au désert que Nabal tondait ses brebis.
5. Il envoya vers lui dix jeunes gens, auxquels il dit: Montez à Carmel, et allez auprès de Nabal. Vous le saluerez en mon nom,
6. et vous lui parlerez ainsi: Pour la vie sois en paix, et que la paix soit avec ta maison et tout ce qui t'appartient!
7. Et maintenant, j'ai appris que tu as les tondeurs. Or tes bergers ont été avec nous; nous ne leur avons fait aucun outrage, et rien ne leur a été enlevé pendant tout le temps qu'ils ont été à Carmel.
8. Demande-le à tes serviteurs, et ils te le diront. Que ces jeunes gens trouvent donc grâce à tes yeux, puisque nous venons dans un jour de joie. Donne donc, je te prie, à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David ce qui se trouvera sous ta main.
9. Lorsque les gens de David furent arrivés, ils répétèrent à Nabal toutes ces paroles, au nom de David. Puis ils se turent.
10. Nabal répondit aux serviteurs de David: Qui est David, et qui est le fils d'Isaï? Il y a aujourd'hui beaucoup de serviteurs qui s'échappent d'auprès de leurs maîtres.
11. Et je prendrais mon pain, mon eau, et mon bétail que j'ai tué pour mes tondeurs, et je les donnerais à des gens qui sont je ne sais d'où?
12. Les gens de David rebroussèrent chemin; ils s'en retournèrent, et redirent, à leur arrivée, toutes ces paroles à David.
13. Alors David dit à ses gens: Que chacun de vous ceigne son épée! Et ils ceignirent chacun leur épée. David aussi ceignit son épée, et environ quatre cents hommes montèrent à sa suite. Il en resta deux cents près des bagages.
14. Un des serviteurs de Nabal vint dire à Abigaïl, femme de Nabal: Voici, David a envoyé du désert des messagers pour saluer notre maître, qui les a rudoyés.
15. Et pourtant ces gens ont été très bons pour nous; ils ne nous ont fait aucun outrage, et rien ne nous a été enlevé, tout le temps que nous avons été avec eux lorsque nous étions dans les champs.
16. Ils nous ont nuit et jour servi de muraille, tout le temps que nous avons été avec eux, faisant paître les troupeaux.
17. Sache maintenant et vois ce que tu as à faire, car la perte de notre maître et de toute sa maison est résolue, et il est si méchant qu'on n'ose lui parler.
18. Abigaïl prit aussitôt deux cents pains, deux outres de vin, cinq pièces de bétail apprêtées, cinq mesures de grain rôti, cent masses de raisins secs, et deux cents de figues sèches. Elle les mit sur des ânes,
19. et elle dit à ses serviteurs: Passez devant moi, je vais vous suivre. Elle ne dit rien à Nabal, son mari.
20. Montée sur un âne, elle descendit la montagne par un chemin couvert; et voici, David et ses gens descendaient en face d'elle, en sorte qu'elle les rencontra.
21. David avait dit: C'est bien en vain que j'ai gardé tout ce que cet homme a dans le désert, et que rien n'a été enlevé de tout ce qu'il possède; il m'a rendu le mal pour le bien.
22. Que Dieu traite son serviteur David dans toute sa rigueur, si je laisse subsister jusqu'à la lumière du matin qui que ce soit de tout ce qui appartient à Nabal!
23. Lorsque Abigaïl aperçut David, elle descendit rapidement de l'âne, tomba sur sa face en présence de David, et se prosterna contre terre.
24. Puis, se jetant à ses pieds, elle dit: A moi la faute, mon seigneur! Permets à ta servante de parler à tes oreilles, et écoute les paroles de ta servante.
25. Que mon seigneur ne prenne pas garde à ce méchant homme, à Nabal, car il est comme son nom; Nabal est son nom, et il y a chez lui de la folie. Et moi, ta servante, je n'ai pas vu les gens que mon seigneur a envoyés.
26. Maintenant, mon seigneur, aussi vrai que l'Eternel est vivant et que ton âme est vivante, c'est l'Eternel qui t'a empêché de répandre le sang et qui a retenu ta main. Que tes ennemis, que ceux qui veulent du mal à mon seigneur soient comme Nabal!
27. Accepte ce présent que ta servante apporte à mon seigneur, et qu'il soit distribué aux gens qui marchent à la suite de mon seigneur.
28. Pardonne, je te prie, la faute de ta servante, car l'Eternel fera à mon seigneur une maison stable; pardonne, car mon seigneur soutient les guerres de l'Eternel, et la méchanceté ne se trouvera jamais en toi.
29. S'il s'élève quelqu'un qui te poursuive et qui en veuille à ta vie, l'âme de mon seigneur sera liée dans le faisceau des vivants auprès de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, et il lancera du creux de la fronde l'âme de tes ennemis.
30. Lorsque l'Eternel aura fait à mon seigneur tout le bien qu'il t'a annoncé, et qu'il t'aura établi chef sur Israël,
31. mon seigneur n'aura ni remords ni souffrance de coeur pour avoir répandu le sang inutilement et pour s'être vengé lui-même. Et lorsque l'Eternel aura fait du bien à mon seigneur, souviens-toi de ta servante.
32. David dit à Abigaïl: Béni soit l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, qui t'a envoyée aujourd'hui à ma rencontre!
33. Béni soit ton bon sens, et bénie sois-tu, toi qui m'as empêché en ce jour de répandre le sang, et qui as retenu ma main!
34. Mais l'Eternel, le Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, est vivant! si tu ne t'étais hâtée de venir au-devant de moi, il ne serait resté qui que ce soit à Nabal, d'ici à la lumière du matin.
35. Et David prit de la main d'Abigaïl ce qu'elle lui avait apporté, et lui dit: Monte en paix dans ta maison; vois, j'ai écouté ta voix, et je t'ai favorablement accueillie.
36. Abigaïl arriva auprès de Nabal. Et voici, il faisait dans sa maison un festin comme un festin de roi; il avait le coeur joyeux, et il était complètement dans l'ivresse. Elle ne lui dit aucune chose, petite ou grande, jusqu'à la lumière du matin.
37. Mais le matin, l'ivresse de Nabal s'étant dissipée, sa femme lui raconta ce qui s'était passé. Le coeur de Nabal reçut un coup mortel, et devint comme une pierre.
38. Environ dix jours après, l'Eternel frappa Nabal, et il mourut.
39. David apprit que Nabal était mort, et il dit: Béni soit l'Eternel, qui a défendu ma cause dans l'outrage que m'a fait Nabal, et qui a empêché son serviteur de faire le mal! L'Eternel a fait retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa tête. David envoya proposer à Abigaïl de devenir sa femme.
40. Les serviteurs de David arrivèrent chez Abigaïl à Carmel, et lui parlèrent ainsi: David nous a envoyés vers toi, afin de te prendre pour sa femme.
41. Elle se leva, se prosterna le visage contre terre, et dit: Voici, ta servante sera une esclave pour laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon seigneur.
42. Et aussitôt Abigaïl partit, montée sur un âne, et accompagnée de cinq jeunes filles; elle suivit les messagers de David, et elle devint sa femme.
43. David avait aussi pris Achinoam de Jizreel, et toutes les deux furent ses femmes.
44. Et Saül avait donné sa fille Mical, femme de David, à Palthi de Gallim, fils de Laïsch.
1. And death came to Samuel; and all Israel came together, weeping for him, and put his body in its resting-place in his house at Ramah. Then David went down to the waste land of Maon.
2. Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel; he was a great man and had three thousand sheep and a thousand goats: and he was cutting the wool of his sheep in Carmel.
3. Now this man was named Nabal, and his wife's name was Abigail: she was a woman of good sense and pleasing looks: but the man was cruel and evil in his ways; he was of the family of Caleb.
4. And David had word in the waste land that Nabal was cutting the wool of his sheep.
5. And David sent ten young men, and said to them, Go up to Carmel and go to Nabal, and say kind words to him in my name;
6. And say this to my brother, May all be well for you: peace be to you and your house and all you have.
7. I have had word that you have wool-cutters: now the keepers of your sheep have been with us, and we have done them no evil, and taken nothing of theirs while they were in Carmel.
8. If your young men are questioned they will say the same thing. So now, let my young men have grace in your eyes, for we are come at a good time; please give anything you may have by you to your servants and to your son David.
9. And when David's young men came, they said all this to Nabal, in David's name, and said nothing more.
10. And Nabal gave them his answer and said, Who is David? who is the son of Jesse? there are a number of servants in these days running away from their masters.
11. Am I to take my bread and my wine and the meat I have got ready for my wool-cutters and give it to men coming from I have no idea where?
12. So David's young men, turning away, went back and gave him an account of everything he had said.
13. And David said to his men, Put on your swords, every one of you. And every man put on his sword; and David did the same; and about four hundred men went up with David, and two hundred kept watch over their goods.
14. But one of the young men said to Nabal's wife Abigail, David sent men from the waste land to say kind words to our master, and he gave them a rough answer.
15. But these men have been very good to us; they did us no wrong and nothing of ours was touched while we were with them in the fields:
16. But day and night they were like a wall round us while we were with them, looking after the sheep.
17. So now, give thought to what you are going to do; for evil is in store for our master and all his house: for he is such a good-for-nothing person that it is not possible to say anything to him.
18. Then Abigail quickly took two hundred cakes of bread and two skins full of wine and five sheep ready for cooking and five measures of dry grain and a hundred parcels of dry grapes and two hundred cakes of figs, and put them on asses.
19. And she said to her young men, Go on in front of me and I will come after you. But she said nothing to her husband Nabal.
20. Now while she was going down under cover of the mountain on her ass, David and his men came down against her, and suddenly she came face to face with them.
21. Now David had said, What was the use of my taking care of this man's goods in the waste land, so that there was no loss of anything which was his? he has only given me back evil for good.
22. May God's punishment be on David, if when morning comes there is so much as one male of his people still living.
23. And when Abigail saw David, she quickly got off her ass, falling down on her face before him.
24. And falling at his feet she said, May the wrong be on me, my lord, on me: let your servant say a word to you, and give ear to the words of your servant.
25. Let my lord give no attention to Nabal, that good-for-nothing: for as his name is, so is he, a man without sense: but I, your servant, did not see the young men whom my lord sent.
26. So now, my lord, by the living God and by your living soul, seeing that the Lord has kept you from the crime of blood and from taking into your hands the punishment for your wrongs, may all your haters, and those who would do evil to my lord, be like Nabal.
27. And let this offering, which your servant gives to my lord, be given to the young men who are with my lord.
28. And may the sin of your servant have forgiveness: for the Lord will certainly make your family strong, because my lord is fighting in the Lord's war; and no evil will be seen in you all your days.
29. And though a man has taken up arms against you, putting your life in danger, still the soul of my lord will be kept safe among the band of the living with the Lord your God; and the souls of those who are against you he will send violently away from him, like stones from a bag.
30. And when the Lord has done for my lord all those good things which he has said he will do for you, and has made you a ruler over Israel;
31. Then you will have no cause for grief, and my lord's heart will not be troubled because you have taken life without cause and have yourself given punishment for your wrongs: and when the Lord has been good to you, then give a thought to your servant.
32. And David said to Abigail, May the Lord, the God of Israel, be praised, who sent you to me today:
33. A blessing on your good sense and on you, who have kept me today from the crime of blood and from taking into my hands the punishment for my wrongs.
34. For truly, by the living Lord, the God of Israel, who has kept me from doing you evil, if you had not been so quick in coming to me and meeting me, by dawn there would not have been in Nabal's house so much as one male living.
35. Then David took from her hands her offering: and he said to her, Go back to your house in peace; see, I have given ear to your voice, and taken your offering with respect.
36. And Abigail went back to Nabal; and he was feasting in his house like a king; and Nabal's heart was full of joy, for he had taken much wine; so she said nothing to him till dawn came.
37. And in the morning, when the effect of the wine was gone, Nabal's wife gave him an account of all these things, and all the heart went out of him, and he became like stone.
38. And about ten days after, the Lord sent disease on Nabal and death came to him.
39. And David, hearing that Nabal was dead, said, May the Lord be praised, who has taken up my cause against Nabal for the shame which he put on me, and has kept back his servant from evil, and has sent on Nabal's head the reward of his evil-doing. And David sent word to Abigail, desiring to take her as his wife.
40. And when David's servants came to Carmel, to Abigail, they said to her, David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.
41. And she got up, and going down on her face to the earth, said, See, I am ready to be a servant-girl, washing the feet of the servants of my lord.
42. Then Abigail got up quickly and went on her ass, with five of her young women, after the men whom David had sent; and she became David's wife.
43. And David had taken Ahinoam of Jezreel, to be his wife; these two were his wives.
44. Now Saul had given his daughter Michal, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish of Gallim.
